ABOUT STE. GENEVIEVE: Ste. Genevieve is located by the Mississippi River and is sixty miles away from St. Louis. It holds the county seat of Ste. Genevieve county and has a population around 5,000 people.
In the early 1700s, early settlers and French explorers were in the area Ste. Genevieve would later become. Settlers were drawn to the area due to its rich soil next to the Mississippi River. Ste. Genevieve later became the first permanent town in Missouri and was originally part of Illinois County. There are some disagreements over when Ste. Genevieve was founded, but most historians agree it was in 1735. The main reason Ste. Genevieve was established because of its potential for growing crops, though there were salt springs below Ste. Genevieve. The salt springs, located on Saline Creek, were used to preserve foods and animal hides, making the salt an important commodity.
Legal business for settlers in Ste. Genevieve originally took place in Kaskaskia, a French community like Ste. Genevieve that was located on the east bank of the Mississippi River. This changed in 1766, when Phillipe de Rocheblave, a commander, took over and made Ste. Genevieve a place where legal business could be conducted.
In 1785, Ste. Genevieve’s location was moved because of excessive flooding that destroyed the old village. Fifteen years later, give or take, the first commercial ferry in Ste. Genevieve was created.
In 1803, France sold the land Ste. Genevie was on to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1812, the United States then combined Ste. Genevieve and the serotonin towns to be one county. You can read more about Ste. Genevieve’s history here where we found all our information.
