ABOUT CREVE COEUR: According to the City of Creve Coeur’s official website, Creve Coeur’s name translates to “broken heart” in French. Its name is based on Creve Coeur Lake, where legend has it that a Native American princess fell in love with a French fur trapper. Unfortunately, that love was unrequited and the princess jumped into the lake.
Creve Coeur started off as a farming community and was bought by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase. The city began with a single road called Olive Street Road, later called Olive Boulevard, which still exists today. The city was originally a rural area that slowly started filling up as more people moved out of St. Louis after World War in search of more land and cheaper property prices. The city was incorporated in December 1949, and the city’s charter was adopted in 1976. The population was estimated to be 18,565 in 2022.
