ABOUT BLOOMSDALE: After a flood struck Ste. Genevieve in 1785, two French families, the Du Clous family and the Janis family, settled where Bloomsdale is today. The Janis family built their house first and are credited with establishing the first house in the district. However, Bloomsdale was first named after the Du Clous family back when it was still a village. The Fourche Du Clous creek was named after them, too.

Once a post office was about to be built, two members of the community, Michael Drury and Alexis Carron, decided to meet about giving Bloomsdale an official name. Mr. Carron suggested naming the town after a school teacher, LaPorte, but the town decided against it. All the town seemed decided on was that they no longer wanted to be called the Village of Du Clous.

The members of the community eventually decide to call the town Bloomsdale because the town was built on level ground surrounded by hills and it was spring when they were debating the town’s name and everything was in bloom. The town members combined the words “bloom” and “dale” to create the town’s name. Contrary to popular belief, the town was not named after the Catholic priest, Father Blume. The priest came to the town after Bloomsdale was named.

After the town was officially named, it grew. The first flour mill in Bloomsdale was built in 1897 and the first high school was built in 1987. The little town also had a saloon that Charles Freeman first owned before he sold it to Joseph Bader. Joseph later then rented it out to his son and Edgar Drury. The saloon finally fell into the hands of Ruth LaBrot, Joseph’s daughter. You can read more about Bloomsdale’s history here, where we found all our information.
