ABOUT CLAYTON: The city of Clayton is named after Ralph Clayton, a Virginian farmer who arrived in the area in the 1830s. He had donated land for the St. Louis County courthouse, with his only request being that the land around the courthouse be named after him. Another Virginian named Martin Haley, who had also settled in the area, donated land for the St. Louis County courthouse too. His farmhouse, the Martin Frankly Hanley House, still stands to this day. Clayton was officially incorporated in 1913 and is the county seat of St. Louis County. The United States Bureau estimated that the city’s population was 17,130 in July 2022.
