ABOUT CHESTERFIELD: Chesterfield, a flourishing city, is located on Interstate 64 and the western edge of St. Louis County. It has grown drastically in the last few years and includes an airport, a hospital, two public schools, and more. The city has a population of over 46,000 people and has more than 2,000 businesses.  

Justus Post was the founder of Chesterfield. In 1817, he laid out over 21,000 acres of land for the original Chesterfield. The Chesterfield that we have now, however, is accredited to Louis Sachs. He began building the Chesterfield Village in the 1960s. Chesterfield Village contained apartments, office buildings, and a mall. It led to a tremendous amount of growth around the town center that is reflected in the city’s population today. 

Present-day Chesterfield was originally home to five other communities including Chesterfield before they disbanded and Chesterfield was left alone. The five communities were called Bellefontaine, Gumbo, Lake, Monarch, and Bonhomme. All of them had a rich history relating to the settlers’s origins and the land. For example, Gumbo was named after the community’s rich soil while Bonhomme and Bellefontaine were nods to the communities’ French roots. The settlers even went as far to name their communities after French words such as Bellefontaine which means “beautiful spring” in French and Bonhomme which means “good man” in French.

Chesterfield is a welcoming city that offers tourists and locals alike a multitude of things to do. Chesterfield includes a butterfly house, a water park, a community theatre, malls, multiple art galleries, and more. There is also a large park located in the center of Chesterfield where concerts often take place. A sculpture called “The Awakening” created by J. Steward Johnson is next to the park.
