St. Louis, Missouri heating and cooling services
St. Louis first began as a fur trading post in 1764. The site for the trading post was selected by Pierre Laclede Liguest and Auguste Chouteau. Auguste Chouteau was Pierre Laclede Liguest’s 13-year-old scout. Pierre Laclede Liguest had been given the land that would later become St. Louis by the King of France. The trading post was named after Louis IX of France and was transferred to the Spanish in 1770. St. Louis was then given to the United States in 1803 along with the rest of the Louisiana Purchase.
St. Louis became famous after the Louisiana Purchase Expedition. It was the starting point for the expedition done by Lewis and Clark. St. Louis was officially recognized as a city in 1823. The population grew tremendously during 1840 and 1860 as immigrants arrived in St. Louis in search of a new life. The majority of immigrants who settled in St. Louis were German or Irish. This was due to the Irish Potato Famine and German Revolution taking place. Later settlers included Serbians, Syrians, Greeks, and Italians who came to St. Louis after the Civil War.
St. Louis hosted the World’s Fair and Olympic games in 1904. Over twenty million people visited the fair during the seven month period it was running. St. Louis later became home to the first gasoline station and automobile accident in the country. The population of St. Louis exploded after World War II and by 1950 St. Louis’ population consisted of 856,000 people. The city became too crowded and people gradually began to move to the suburbs. The population of St. Louis began to steadily decline and in 1980, there were only 450,000 people in the city. You can read more about St. Louis’ history here, where we found all of our information.
